When to switch a Labrador from puppy to adult food?
Most large-breed Labs switch around 12–18 months, once growth has clearly slowed. Change food gradually over 7–10 days. Keep them lean through the switch, because excess weight during growth is linked to hip and elbow problems, and ask your vet if you are unsure. Answer page →
What is the best puppy food for Labs?
Choose a large-breed puppy formula that controls calcium and calories for growing joints. Keep the breeder’s food for about a week, then transition over 7–10 days. Measure every meal with a scale or cup and track body condition so the puppy stays lean. Answer page →
The one rule: large-breed growth
Labs (55–80 lb as adults) are large-breed dogs. Look for an AAFCO statement saying the food is complete and balanced for “growth, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult)”, or “all life stages including growth of large size dogs”. Large-breed growth formulas cap calcium and control energy density. That supports steady rather than rapid growth, which matters for hip and elbow development.
Check the current bag for its AAFCO statement before buying, because formulas change.
How much?
Puppies need about 3 × RER under 4 months and 2 × RER from 4 months to adulthood (Merck). Then adjust to body condition: you should be able to feel the ribs easily. Track growth against an estimated curve with our puppy growth calculator.
