Can Labs eat chocolate?

By · Updated

Short answer

No. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs clear slowly. Risk depends on the type, amount and your dog’s weight: cocoa powder and baking chocolate are far more concentrated than milk chocolate. The Merck Veterinary Manual reports mild signs from about 20 mg/kg of these compounds and heart effects at 40–50 mg/kg.
